Mantels & Shelves

Tie your space together with a timeless piece of American history.

Custom Reclaimed Wood Mantels

Your fireplace is a gathering place for family, friends, and visitors; it deserves a mantel with a story. At Weathered Frog, we transform authentic hand-hewn beams from 1840s-1860s Pennsylvania barns into stunning custom mantels that become the focal point of any room. Each piece is made to order, finished to your specifications, and typically completed in less than one week.

Why choose a Reclaimed Wood Mantel?

Genuine Hand-Hewn Character: Every adze mark and axe cut tells the story of early American pioneers who shaped these timbers entirely by hand. This isn’t distressed new wood—it’s authentic history.

Custom Made for Your Space: We don’t keep standard inventory. Each mantel is custom-crafted to your exact length, beam size, and finish preference—ensuring a perfect fit for your fireplace.

Quick Turnaround: Most custom mantels are completed quickly, giving you very little time from order to delivery.

Professional Finishing: Through years of experience, we’ve perfected techniques that preserve the wood’s character while enhancing its beauty and creating a smooth, splinter-free surface perfect for daily use.

Floating Shelves and Display Shelving

Beyond fireplace mantels, we also create custom floating shelves and display shelving from reclaimed barn wood. These make perfect additions to:

Living Rooms – above sofas or as a tv stand

Kitchens – open shelving for dishes, pots, pans, or cookbooks

Bathrooms – towel storage with character

Bedrooms – rustic shelves above your headboard or in your closet

Offices – display awards, books, or decor

Custom shelving is priced similarly to mantels based on size and finish. Bracket options available including hidden floating shelf hardware or decorative wrought iron.

Installation Tips

While we don’t provide installation services, we offer guidance to ensure successful mounting:

• Use heavy-duty mantel brackets or floating shelf hardware rated for the weight

• Mount into wall studs for maximum security

• Our lightweight antique hemlock makes installation easier than heavy oak mantels

• We can recommend local contractors experienced with reclaimed wood

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have mantels in stock, ready to go?

Not usually. Most mantels are so custom (length, beam size, finish) that we cannot keep inventory to meet every customer’s needs. We work with each individual to complete custom orders. Most mantels are completed in less than one week.

Can I finish the mantel myself?

Absolutely, though we don’t recommend it. With lots of experience through trial and error, we’ve found the best ways to finish these beams to preserve their character, reduce splintering, and enhance their “touchability.” Our professional finishing is included in the price and ensures the best results.

How heavy will my mantel be?

Our antique hemlock beams are very lightweight. Being 150+ years old, they have no residual moisture. A typical 8″x8″x6′ mantel weighs about 60-75 pounds—much lighter than oak or railroad ties.

How do I mount the mantel securely?

Check out our blog post detailing the mounting instructions!

What size mantel do I need for my fireplace?

A good rule of thumb: your mantel should extend at least 5-9 inches beyond each side of your fireplace opening  and inside of your total stone or brick by 2 or 3 inches on each side for visual balance. For example, if your fireplace opening is 40 inches wide, a 5-6 foot mantel (60-72 inches) would look proportional. Beam depth (front to back) is a design choice. When in doubt, send us a photo of your fireplace with measurements and we’ll recommend proportions that will look great.

Can reclaimed wood shelves support heavy items like books?

Absolutely! Our reclaimed barn wood is incredibly strong. Remember, these timbers supported entire barn structures for 150+ years! A properly mounted shelf made from a 2-3 inch thick barn board can easily hold books, decorative items, dishware, and other everyday objects. The weight capacity depends on: (1) the shelf thickness and width, (2) the span between supports (shorter spans hold more weight), and (3) how it’s mounted—shelves secured into wall studs with heavy-duty brackets will support far more weight than those mounted with drywall anchors. For heavy-duty applications like pantry shelving or workshop storage, we can recommend beam sizes and mounting systems to ensure your shelves are rock-solid. This isn’t delicate decorative wood, it’s wood with a history of working that is ready for its next challenge!
